A Cuppa or Two a Day Can Keep Liver Cirrhosis Away!

No harms in enjoying a cup of coffee as it seems to keep the liver healthy by preventing risks of liver failure and cancer, according to a recent review.

The study published in the Journal Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics was led by Dr. O. J. Kennedy and colleagues from the University of Southampton. They reviewed nine longitudinal studies involving 978 middle aged men from six countries and each study lasted more than 15 years.

‘Regular consumption of coffee can cut the risk of liver cirrhosis by 44%.’

They found that two cups of coffee per day may reduce the risk of cirrhosis by 44 percent and it may nearly halve the risk of dying from cirrhosis.

Liver cirrhosis is a condition where the liver is scarred due to long-term effects of toxins like alcohol or due to hepatitis C infection. It can be fatal as it can lead to liver failure and cancer.

Kennedy said that coffee appeared to protect against cirrhosis and their research could be an important finding for patients at risk of cirrhosis to help to improve their health outcomes.
